What do Tesla, Broadway and Icelandic Fish have in common?

14. June 2022

Not much at first sight, but they are all topics chosen by MOC students for their cluster research projects. Broadway is the iconic core of the New York City performing arts cluster, while the Icelandic Fish Cluster tries to keep the country's traditional fishery industry and its related and supporting industries and research organisations up and going. Tesla is of course not a cluster of related firms, but the most recent and prominent entry into the automotive cluster in East Germany, which looks back at a long history with two systemic transitions in the 20th century, but also forward to new opportunities through autonomous driving and electric mobility including the manufacturing of batteries. The new MOC class is as diverse as ever, combining nine RUB students and four from the Technical University of Dortmund. They represent master-level programmes as diverse as Management and Economics, Economic Policy Consulting, Spatial Planning, Biology, and Mechanical Engineering. This diversity creates a vibrant atmosphere for weekly case discussions in class, but also for the teams of 3-4 students analysing the competitive challenges of their cluster to come up with recommendations as to how that may be improved. While the 2022 MOC class at RUB is well under way, registrations are already open for MOC in the winter semester of 2022/2023. Once again, MOC will be offered as a virtual exchange format open to all students of the University Alliance Ruhr (UAR) and the UNIC network of universities. However, the next class will move to another timeslot: MOC in the winter semester semester will be held weekly on Tuesdays from 9-12 am, starting on 11 October.
