The WHO GIS Centre for Health has access to three significant datasets: one is a commercial product from Maxxar/Ecopia with building footprints for all of Africa; the second is a product released by Google which also covers Africa and has over 516 million detected structures, and the third are the buildings contributed by volunteers to the OpenStreetMap platform. While the underlying process and datasets used may be different, it is of great interest to the GIS Centre to compare these datasets. We suggest a comparative study to assess accuracy, completeness, level of detail to understand better which dataset is most suitable for which application. This can be further extended to visually check against external satellite imagery to ‘ground truth’ the data with associated error matrix and quantitative analysis. The position is paid.
