European MOC Network Meeting in Switzerland

16. September 2019

Prof Kiese represented RUB at the annual meeting of the Microeconomics of Competitiveness (MOC) Affiliate Network’s European Chapter in Olten, Switzerland. Profs Tina Haisch and Franz Barjak of the School of Business at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland took over the lead of the Chapter for the Academic Year of 2019/2020. During the meeting on 12/13 September, some 20 network members updated each other about their research and teaching activities and discussed possibilities to deepen their co-operation in these fields, as well as to increase the Chapter’s visibility and impact. Returning to the school that had introduced him to MOC ten years ago, Prof Kiese contributed a presentation entitled “Shadows of the Past: Can Germany’s Rustbelt Compete in the Knowledge-based Economy?”. The presentation is available for download from http://www.geographie.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/de/forschung/stadt-und-regionaloekonomie/mitarbeiter-innen/kiese/vortraege. The meeting in the canton of Solothurn also included presentation from, and discussions with several practitioners from the wider host region’s economic development and cluster management scene. They represented organisations as diverse as the forest management of Bürgergemeinde Bern, the City of Olten’s economic development agency, BaselAreaSwiss covering the three cantons of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Land and Jura, Switzerland Innovation Park and Swiss Smart Factory. As one outcome of the Chapter meeting, MOC at RUB will once again benefit from an attractive mix of guest instructors leading individual case discussions during the winter semester. The graduate course “Microeconomics of Competitiveness: Firms, Clusters and Economic Development” is based on materials developed by Prof Michael E Porter and his team at Harvard Business School (HBS). It will be held every Monday from 14-17 hrs c.t. from 07 October. Registration is open by email to matthias.kiese@rub.de stating name, programme and matriculation number until 30 September 2019. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.   MOC@RUB  https://www.geographie.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/forschung/stadt-und-regionaloekonomie/microeconomics-of-competitiveness MOC@HBS  https://www.isc.hbs.edu/resources/courses/moc-course-at-harvard/Pages/default.aspx E-MOC         http://www.emoc.eu   Bochum, 13 September 2019 Prof Dr Matthias Kiese
