MOC Affiliate Faculty Workshop at Harvard

RUB Microeconomics of Competitiveness (MOC) instructor Prof Matthias Kiese and his former co-instructor Dr Christian Hundt attended the annual MOC Affiliate Faculty Workshop at Harvard Business School this week. The workshop started with a research session on Monday, which included the presentation of six research papers from within the network. An online vote at the end identified Prof Eleanor Doyle (University College Cork) as having delivered the best presentation, which focused on visualising the geographic extent of eight kinds of collaborative linkages of information and communication technology firms from the Cork region. As the research session, the rest of the Workshop focused on issues of clusters, competitiveness and economic development, surrounding the MOC course developed by Prof Michael E. Porter and his team at Harvard Business School. Highlights included a presentation by former Peruvian minister Piero Ghezzi on public-private collaboration for modern industrial policy, as well as an update by Mark Kramer on Creating Shared Value - a concept he had introduced jointly with Prof Michael E Porter in 2011 to link Corporate Social Responsibility to a firm's competitive advantage. At Tuesday's evening reception, Prof Porter revealed the winner of this year's student award competition. The award was given to the Orkestra Basque Institute of Competitiveness for a case study on the Cyber Security Cluster in Israel - a topical issue around the globe, but also resonating with recent developments in Bochum. RUB had submitted an analysis of the Chinese Photovoltaic cluster this year, which - contrary to its title - did not quite manage to "outshine the competition". However, it was still ranked among the top 16 contribution in this contest, which is open to all 122 universities in the MOC network. About MOC Prof Michael E Porter and his team at the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School developed MOC in a multi-year effort. First introduced to other universities in 2002, the course explores the determinants of economic development from a microeconomic perspective, putting firms centre stage. The course is entirely based on case studies investigating the sources of competitiveness at the levels of firms, clusters and territorial entities ranging from supra-national regions via nations and sub-regional nations to cities. It is free from mathematical formulas and abstract modelling The 2018 MOC Impact Report revealed that 363 affiliate faculty members at a record 122 universities worldwide currently teach the course. Cumulatively, 47,644 students have taken the course, which is more than RUB's current student population. Affiliate faculty network members have been involved in almost 700 cluster initiatives and close to 1,000 national and regional competitiveness initiatives. They developed more than 400 case studies on clusters and competitiveness, and undertook 838 competitiveness research projects. RUB joined the MOC network in 2013. Preparations are currently under way for the eighth MOC class to be offered in the Summer Term of 2019. As usual, the course will be offered on a weekly basis every Monday afternoon from 14-17 hours. Until 22 March, 2019, Master-level and PhD students from all programmes are invited to register with matthias.kiese@rub.de, stating name, study program and matriculation number. Places will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis.
