New publication from the Bochum Urban Climate Lab: Analysis of nocturnal heat advection in urban areas

Jonas Kittner has published a new study together with colleagues in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society. The study investigates the nocturnal advection of urban heat, i.e., the transport of air heated within the city into the surrounding areas, and uses a newly developed approach in which data from thousands of crowd weather stations are utilized.

The results from the cities of Paris and Berlin show that wind has a decisive influence on the spread of urban heat. Especially at wind speeds around 3 m/s, heat is increasingly transported into leeward urban and surrounding areas. Thus, not only the city centers but also adjacent regions are affected by additional heat.

The study provides an important contribution to understanding the spatial variability of urban heat stress and emphasizes the relevance of citizen science data for urban climate research.
