Early childhood environmental education: Exploring urban climate at the climate station

In April, the Bochum Urban Climate Lab, in cooperation with the Zechenstraße daycare center, organized an interactive afternoon session for children aged three to five. The aim was to provide a playful and age-appropriate introduction to the topics of weather and water conservation.

The centerpiece of the afternoon was a visit to the Ludger Mintrop Urban Climate Monitoring Station. There, the children had the opportunity to observe and explore how weather data, such as temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation, is collected. A particular focus was placed on the topic of water: child-friendly explanations and guided discovery helped convey the connection between weather phenomena and the responsible use of water resources in an accessible way.

The event was met with great interest: the children engaged with curiosity, and several parents also showed strong interest in the topics presented. The afternoon clearly demonstrated how effective environmental education can be, even at the preschool level.
