The participatory project activates the community in the Muringato catchment area to assess climate change impacts, develop an early warning system for risky weather conditions and implement reforestation measures.

In the follow-up project to ‘CITGI4Muringato’, the focus is on the participation of citizens and in particular on mitigating the effects of climate change on cultivated crops in the Muringato catchment area. This initially includes the assessment of phenological changes in plants in connection with climate change, as well as the development of an early warning system for soil moisture and crop yields based on real-time weather data. Soil moisture sensors are also being installed in fields for this purpose. In this way, farmers can be advised directly with specific recommendations for action and react to climatic changes. A planting calendar adapted to the changes in precipitation should also reduce the amount of water taken from rivers to irrigate fields.

Throughout the entire project phase, but especially during the planning and implementation of the reforestation measures in Nyeri, groups such as women and schoolchildren, who were less involved in the previous structures, are to be integrated. Environmental workshops will be held in schools and the community and awareness of environmental protection in general will be raised. The monitoring of reforestation measures in cooperation with the Kenyan authorities, among others, should also contribute to this.

About the project: Participatory approach to mitigating the effects of climate change and reforesting the Muringato catchment area.
