Virtual participation of the GI at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2020 in Vienna

12. May 2020

To the press release of the RUBaThis year, however, the participants did not go to Vienna, but from the home office into cyberspace. In order to reduce the impact of COVID-19, the organisers decided this year to move the fair from Vienna to the internet. Under the motto "EGU2020: Sharing Geoscience Online", Mr. Clemens Kramm, for the Geomatics Working Group, was able to present their poster contribution to an international audience last Wednesday. In an online chat room lasting about two hours, 40 interested symposium participants were able to ask questions live, submit suggestions and make contacts.

The contribution entitled "Earth Observation Videos in Schools - Enriching a School Lesson on Geographic Zones with Footage from the ISS" aims to integrate the Earth observation videos of the High Definition Earth Viewing Experiment of the International Space Station (ISS) into the school curriculum in a way that conveys knowledge and is well-founded. For this purpose, a complete lesson plan was developed based on the curricula of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition to the analysis of the thematic content, this lesson plan also includes the analysis of the curricula, the school class, the didactics, the method and the material. In this way, it not only shows how remote sensing material can be profitably integrated into lessons, but it can also inspire teachers to use similar approaches for other thematic focuses. As it is a fully developed draft (including worksheets), the result is immediately ready for practical use in schools.

Positive feedback was received especially on the fascinating video material and the applicability of this work. Questions were asked, for example, how other teachers and schools would be made aware of this material and whether the design would not offer a great opportunity for homeschooling. We will take both the helpful reflection and some of the contacts made into our further work and look forward to participating in the EGU General Assembly again next year. But then hopefully face-to-face in the metropolis on the Danube.
