In urban and regional research, a broad spectrum of empirical methods is used to collect, analyze and present a wide variety of data. The module provides an overview of different approaches to empirical urban and regional research and their scientific theoretical foundations. It introduces some common methods in the context of these different approaches and critically discusses their potential applications, strengths and weaknesses. Both quantitative-statistical and qualitative-understanding methods are covered. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition and analysis of data.

Due to the consistent content, the discursive and project-oriented character of the course, regular attendance in the courses of the module is, in addition to passing the examination, a basic requirement for the award of credit points.

The module requires a large amount of self-organized work. The work will be done alone or in small groups during the lecture and lecture-free periods. Participants should therefore also plan time for the work to be done during the lecture-free period after the respective semesters.
