Environmental problems and environmental conflicts

Preconditions to participate: Target audience: Master's students interested in understanding and analyzing environmental problems and conflicts through interdisciplinary perspectives and approaches.
Learning Goals

The following general learning objectives are targeted, regardless of the semester topic:

  • Understanding of the connection between environmental problems and environmental conflicts
  • To enable critical examination of controversial positions on causes, effects and solutions
  • Recognize and critically evaluate connections between research approaches of the different geographical sub-disciplines.

Related to a varied selection of environmental problems and environmental conflicts:

  • students will be able to explain scientific relationships underlying environmental problems or environmental conflicts,
  • students understand the problem perspectives of relevant social groups and actors,
  • students learn to deal critically with controversial positions on causes, effects and approaches to solutions,
  • students recognize the advantage of multi-perspective approaches and research approaches,
  • students consolidate their skills in the discussion and analysis of divergent viewpoints,
  • students work with scientific publications,
  • students are able to express themselves appropriately in writing on complex issues.
Contents

The module aims to provide a comprehensive and interdisciplinary overview of current environmental problems and the conflicts associated with them, as well as possible strategies and means for overcoming them. Environmental conflicts and problems will be explained and presented for discussion from both physical and human geographic perspectives using specific examples. The case studies covered in this module will vary depending on the topicality and teachers of year:

  • Fundamentals of human-environment systems and their understanding and analysis.
  • Ecosystems and their services
  • Valuation approaches to ecosystems and landscapes
  • Resource use and management
  • Pollution and degradation of ecosystems and natural resources
  • Climate change

Structure

The module includes both individual asynchronous learning to work through the lecture materials provided and to prepare for the seminars, and synchronous sessions via video conferencing.

For the award of credit points, one course credit and one examination credit must be completed. The course credit is earned through active participation in the seminar activities.
