In April, three members of the Nighttime Lights Remote Sensing group visited the group of Prof. Salvo Marcuccio at the Space Systems Laboratory of the University of Pisa. Our two teams plan to jointly apply for funding for observations from stratospheric balloon flights. During these flights, we will test and hopefully demonstrate the utility of extremely high sensitivity photography at night for measuring skyglow from above, and for detecting clouds at night using only visible light. Stratospheric balloons fly well above 10 km, where nearly all of Earth's atmosphere is below them. They therefore offer a "near space" environment for testing technologies and methods. After the work was completed, we had some time to appreciate the city of Pisa, including a visit to the famous Leaning Tower.
