What creeps and crawls in the ponds of the Botanic Garden? Master's students from the Department of Geography investigated this question on May 7 as part of the “Messen und Modellieren I” course. Under the competent guidance of amphibian expert Guido Weber (weluga Umweltplanung), they mapped the newt populations in various ponds.
The aim of the mapping was to get to know different amphibian species and gain an overview of different trapping methods. In addition to the protected alpine (Ichthyosaura alpestris) and smooth newts (Lissotriton vulgaris), the students also discovered numerous other inhabitants of the still water habitat, including Pelophylax, mosaic darner larvae (Aeshna) and various water snails and heteropterans.
We are delighted about the successful collaboration with Guido Weber, who enriches the course with his wealth of experience and practical impulses.
