On Friday, January 31, Christopher Kyba (a former member of the GI) presented a talk entitled "Acquainted with the Night: Geographic information after sundown, and its importance for research and teaching". The talk covered Christopher's biography (how he moved from North America to Europe and from physics to environmental science and geography), his past and future planned research related to outdoor light at night, and his thoughts about the importance of including teaching about the night in geography programs. He proposed that students can get acquainted with nighttime topics both through exercises in existing classes (e.g. introducing nighttime lights in teaching GIS), and in the longer term with new classes specifically about night related themes. The talk will be repeated in February or March for GI members who could not attend the first showing.
