Which are the popular public green spaces in the city of Bochum? How are they perceived by the people in the city? Are there any public green spaces that are not particularly attractive?

These are the questions that Claudia Romelli, Dr. Carl Anderson and Prof. Christian Albert from the Environmental Analysis and Planning for Metropolitan Regions working group want to explore.

With the online survey "Your Green Spaces in Bochum", the research team is investigating what relationships people in the city have with public green spaces. The project not only wants to understand where people like to spend time and why, but also to find out if there are green spaces that are avoided due to negative experiences.

The survey is implemented in the innovative survey tool Maptionnaire. This allows the collection of qualitative, quantitative and spatial data. Respondents are asked to mark certain places on a map, in addition to other traditional survey questions. It is thus a so-called participatory mapping activity.

Understanding citizens' preferences is an important step in designing and planning future cities where natural spaces are well integrated into the urban fabric and designed to maximise citizens’ well-being in the city. Innovative digital tools can be helpful in supporting the participatory process and understanding preferences.
