Transforming Urban Green Space

22. June 2020

The seventh edition of the Bochum Seminar on the Transformation or Urban Spaces (BISTUS) took place last week, held as an online seminar for the first time. The Institute of Geography is delighted to have won Dr Carla-Leanne Washbourne as guest lecturer this semester. Dr Washbourne is a Lecturer in Environmental Science and Policy at the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy at University College London (UCL). Elected mostly by graduate students in geography at RUB and spatial planning at TU Dortmund, the class dealt with the challenge of transforming urban green space. Starting with how to identify different types of urban green space, they moved on to understand how urban green spaces are planned, built and managed, considering the key benefits and challenges of urban greening. The class went on to explore how local-scale approaches to urban green space can have global-scale impacts, before the students were ultimately challenged to come up with own ideas for how urban green space can contribute to transformative change.
