Geographical Information Systems II: Concepts and Systems

Semester: 2.
Credits: 6 CP
Duration: 1 Semester
Module Supervisor: Dr. Andreas Redecker
Contact hours: 3 SWS
Selfstudy: 140 h
Group size: 15
Learning Goals

The participants are able to learn and present topics and techniques from the GIS world by themselves. They know different concepts of free and commercial products in the field of web mapping, client-server GIS applications, desktop GIS, mobile GIS, etc.

Contents

In the module Geographical Information Systems (GIS) II the knowledge in the field of desktop GIS is extended by further products and client-server technologies. The contents are prepared by the course participants themselves - partly in small groups - and conveyed to the fellow students during a seminar session by means of a lecture and an exercise. The following topics are covered, among others: Client-Server techniques, web technologies, databases, web mapping, ArcGIS Server, web mapping clients, GoogleEarth/ BingMaps, Network Analyst, commercial GIS, free GIS, mobile GIS, standardization.

The conception of this module is to prepare the participants for the independent development and presentation of questions in GIS practice - as it is often required in professional life. Due to the introduction to the different technologies in the form of lectures and exercises by the students themselves, the learning success of the group is highly dependent on the motivation of each individual student. As part of the course, servers with current versions of the various services and software required are made available for familiarization and self-study, as well as for consolidation of the material taught by fellow students.

Teaching methods

Seminar
The teaching of methodological skills through practical exercises (partly using special software) as well as through the joint elaboration of theory-based findings in scientific discourse require the regular attendance of the students at the seminar sessions (with a maximum of 2 absences).

Mode of assessment

Application of the acquired knowledge in a project-oriented term paper. The students should demonstrate their ability to independently select suitable technologies on the basis of the acquired knowledge and to apply them for the processing of a task.
