Students can describe empirically obtained data and use such data to investigate or test hypotheses about the underlying problem in each case.
Mathematics provides a universal language and makes it possible to describe certain aspects precisely and thus make them accessible to an objective - i.e. in particular comprehensible - scientific analysis. Statistics plays an important role in this. Empirical research, such as that conducted in geography, is based on the collection of data. Such data are always subject to random errors, whether due to measurement errors or because only a certain number of individual measurements (observations) are available. An important task of statistics is to provide procedures for evaluating such data, including quantifying the degree of accuracy and reliability of the conclusions drawn from the data.
The module includes refreshing and deepening knowledge of mathematics, the introduction to scientific ways of thinking and working as well as the independent evaluation of data. The subjects are elementary arithmetic, descriptive statistics, elementary probability calculation, conclusive statistics and linear regression.
