The student demonstrates the ability to independently identify a limited geographical problem within a given period of time and to process and present it using simple scientific methods.
The following statements reproduce central statements of the PO in an abbreviated form. The formal criteria for writing the Bachelor thesis are based on the standards set in the seminars of the module 'Introduction to the Study of Geography'. Furthermore, reference is made to the instructions on the formal design of term papers and examination papers on the website of the Department of Geography as well as to relevant literature.
The Bachelor thesis is part of the Bachelor examination. The thesis should be written and submitted during the 3rd year of study. It is about 10,000 words long, which corresponds to about 30 pages in the usual formatting. The processing time is 16 weeks. The topic can only be returned once and only within the first two weeks of the processing time.
The student has a right of proposal for the topic and the supervision of the Bachelor thesis. After a hearing, the topic proposer names the intended topic. Alternatively, upon request, the chairperson of the examination board can ensure that the student is assigned a topic for the Bachelor thesis in good time. In this case, however, the students waive their right to propose a topic.
The bachelor's thesis has to be uploaded on time as a PDF or pdfA to the examination office's portal for electronic submission of bachelor's or master's theses (Sciebo). In doing so, the student assures in writing that the work has been written independently and that no sources and aids other than those stated have been used and that quotations have been marked. If plagiarism is discovered, the examination will be assessed as failed and the student may be excluded from all further examinations. Work not handed in on time will be assessed as failed.
The assessment, set down in writing by the topic submitter, is carried out within four weeks of submission according to the percentage point system. Theses are passed if the evaluation reaches at least 50 percentage points. The Bachelor thesis receives an examination grade according to the system specified in the examination regulations. If the grade is at least sufficient, it receives 12 CP. Theses that have not been graded sufficiently can be repeated once (!).
