Learning Goals

Urban Spaces:
Students acquire specialized skills based on important theories, models and methods of geographical urban research. After successful completion of the module, students will be able to interpret urban spaces worldwide in their historical, societal, political and cultural anchoring and analyze the development paths of structural, functional and institutional change in their dependence on exogenous (keyword: globalization) as well as endogenous influencing factors (keyword: demographic and societal change) - and understand them in particular in their spatial multi-level relationship. They have a broad basic knowledge of urban development in Germany from its origins to the present day and have dealt in a differentiated manner with current transformation processes in urban areas within and outside Germany using selected examples (including from Western Europe, East Asia, North and South America). Students will be able to adequately argue for the need for context-sensitive urban research.

Spatial Planning:
Students have knowledge of the concepts and organizational structures of spatial planning in Germany as well as their legal foundations and planning responsibilities. Spatial planning in the federal territory, state planning with a focus on NRW, and urban land use planning are taught. Environmental concerns and specialized spatial planning supplement the knowledge in areas relevant to the professional field.

Urbanity, city and space: meanings, concepts, levels of scale.

New urban spaces and frontier zones of urban development (including waterfront development, urban renaissance, knowledge-based urban development): Leitbilder, actors, projects

Research perspectives and scientific-theoretical basic positions in geographical urban research

Historical urban development and urban planning phases in Germany and international influences

Theories and models of urban development, approaches and methods of urban differentiation, urban spaces in intercultural comparison

Megacities and global cities

Urban systems, central city systems and inner city centers


Spatial planning:

Early concepts of planned use of space

The development of spatial planning in Germany

The organization of spatial planning in Europe and Germany

Concepts of spatial planning policy

Principles, guiding principles and objectives of spatial planning

Sustainable spatial planning

European regulations

Spatial planning at federal level

Spatial planning at state level

Spatial planning at municipal level

Landscape planning, nature conservation and environmental impact assessment

Spatial Planning I: Lecture, Blended-Learning

Mode of assessment

Written exam on the contents of the lectures Urban Spaces as well as Spatial Planning I with the weightings 65% (UR) to 35% (RPI).


Additional Information

Conditions for granting credit points

Participation in the excursion in Urban Spaces as a course achievement and passed course achievement in Spatial Planning I (minutes of a public meeting relevant to planning with 1,200 words), passed overall examination as an examination achievement
