The module Quantitative and Qualitative Methods in Geography: Introduction to Programming and Applied Statistics is part of the B.Sc. Geography program and introduces students to fundamental programming skills in Python 3 over the course of one semester, with a focus on physical geography applications. Within the two-part module, students learn how to structure and analyze data as well as apply different methods of data visualization. This includes an introduction to the data analysis library pandas and visualization libraries such as matplotlib and seaborn. Alongside the teaching of programming fundamentals, particular emphasis is placed on practical work and application-oriented exercises.

The module provides students with valuable methodological skills for subsequent modules and thesis projects, as well as important experience and competencies relevant for future professional careers. Students complete exercises, coursework assignments, and a final project in order to deepen and apply their acquired knowledge.

The aim of the module is to process, prepare, and visualize quantitative data from physical-geographical fieldwork and thereby further develop and strengthen methodological competencies.
