B.Sc. and M.Sc. - theses to be assigned.

Interested students are sought for the following projects:

  • Influence of Wastewater Quality on Soil Properties in the Mezquital Valley:
    • Quaternary Alkylammonium Compounds, Concentrations, and Infiltration Properties   (Ines Mulder, Benjamin Heyde)
  • Degradation of Quaternary Alkylammonium Compounds in Soils and Waters:
    • Literature Review and Experimental Investigation   (Benjamin Heyde)
  • Comparison of Spiking Methods for Calculating Recovery Rates in Soils:
    • Literature Review and Experimental Investigation   (Benjamin Heyde)
  • Applications of an Autoclave for Soil Sterilization:
    • In this study, soil samples will be treated by autoclaving to achieve as complete sterilization as possible (including various pre- and post-treatments). The success will be verified by measuring microbial activity.   (Michael Herre)
  • Reactivation of Microbial Activity in Sterile Soil Samples in the Upper and Lower Soil Layers:   [Laboratory, Field]
    • Previously sterilized soil samples will be placed in mesh bags in the field to study the recolonization of the soil after a defined period.   (Michael Herre)
  • Spatial Distribution of Enzyme Activity Along a Slope Gradient:   [Laboratory, Field, GIS]
    • This study will examine enzyme activity in soil along a slope (upper, middle, and lower slope) to identify spatial distribution patterns.   (Michael Herre)
  • Spatial Analysis of Selected Soil Parameters in a Forest Ecosystem with Different Successional Stages:   [Laboratory, Field, GIS]
    • This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution patterns of various soil parameters in a forest ecosystem using a geostatistical approach.   (Michael Herre)
  • Heavy Metal Contamination in Small Gardens Near Industrial Areas in the Ruhr Region:   [Laboratory, Field]
    • Soil samples from small garden areas in former industrial regions will be examined for possible heavy metal contamination.   (Michael Herre)
  • Carbon Farming NRW: Potentials and Challenges of Carbon Storage on Agricultural Land:   [Literature, Data Analysis]
    • The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to investigate in detail the potentials of carbon farming in NRW and identify the challenges associated with its implementation.   (Michael Herre)
  • Carbon Farming in Europe: Analysis and Transferability of Successful Methods to Germany:   [Literature, Data Analysis]
    • This bachelor's thesis aims to evaluate the practices and findings of carbon farming from across Europe. Successful approaches and innovative methods from different European countries will be examined.   (Michael Herre)
  • Changes in the Discharge Regime of a Glacial River in the Ötztal Alps:   [Data Analysis]
    • This study will examine the effects of climate change on the discharge behavior of a glacial river in the Ötztal Alps. It will investigate whether the discharge regime has significantly changed in recent decades and how the changing climate affects its intensity and timing. The study will include climatological (temperature, precipitation…), glaciological (mass balance…), and hydrological (discharge intensity, Pardé coefficient…) parameters.   (Michael Herre)
  • Zeta Potentials of Microplastics:   [Laboratory]
    • This study will measure the zeta potentials (electric charge on the particle surface) of different types of microplastics in soils to better understand the interaction between microplastics and soil components.   (Ines Mulder, Stefanie Heinze, Michael Herre)
