Current cartographic experiments

Here you'll find an overview of the currently ongoing experimental cartography studies. Would you like to gain insights into our research and earn a few Euros on the side? You can schedule an appointment to participate directly using the study registration links!

MRI-study: Influence of grid cells on navigation performance

Using a navigation tool, you will navigate through a virtual environment and follow a path marked by cones and cylinders. At the end, you will try to return to the starting point as accurately as possible — the more precise you are, the more points you earn. Throughout the task, you will lie in an MRI scanner (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), which records your brain activity during navigation.

Compensation: €15/hour

Duration: 2 sessions of approx. 2 hours each

Location: IfADo in Dortmund

Participation requirements:

  • right-handedness
  • age: 18 - 35 years
  • mentally and physically healthy
  • no regular medication (exception: hormonal contraception, e.g. birth control pill)
  • MRI compatibility (e.g. no metal in the body, no claustrophobia)
  • no neurological or psychiatric disorders (e.g. migraine, epilepsy, ADHD, depression, schizophrenia)
  • no drug or alcohol addiction

Not sure if you meet all the criteria? Then check your MRI eligibility with this screening questionnaire: https://qualtricsxmj25hq86nc.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1RNYV982EqW3loq

[Starts January 2026!] VR study: Influence of grid cells and different locomotion methods on navigation performance (ERC04)

While wearing VR glasses, you move through a virtual environment either physically or with the help of controllers and follow a route marked by cones and cylinders. At the end, you try to point to the starting point as accurately as possible—the more precise you are, the more points you receive. The study consists of two sub-experiments that are similar in terms of their tasks.

Compensation: €10

Duration: approx. 60 min

Location: Peter Schöller Room, Building IA, Level 5, Room 82-162 (two entrances!)

Participation requirements:

  • No previous neurological or psychiatric conditions
  • No vision impairment or corrected vision impairment (to ensure that the VR glasses fit properly, please wear contact lenses or small eyeglass frames!)
