"Urban Future Ruhr" is the new lead project of the Initiativkreis Ruhr. Based in the Duisburg district of Hochfeld, integrated approaches to solutions for the pressing issues of the future are to be developed in a joint project that can be transferred to comparable neighbourhoods in the Ruhr region and tested and implemented over a period of several years. The project is coordinated by the newly founded Urbane Zukunft Ruhr GmbH under the auspices of the Duisburg construction company GEBAG and the Initiativkreis Ruhr. "Education & Social Affairs", "Housing & Public Space" and "Mobility" have been identified as central fields of action. Sustainability and digitalisation are cross-cutting themes. At the same time, the IGA 2027 with the future garden "RheinPark und Anbindung" and urban redevelopment projects in the peripheral areas are providing new impetus.
Following on from the results of the transformative project seminar of Applied Geography in the summer semester of 2022, in which four teams dealt with the topics of "Governance of Transformation", "Socio-cultural Diversity and Participation", "Public Spaces" and "Green Transformation", the question of the extent to which Hochfeld is suitable as an innovation laboratory for a socio-ecological transformation and how such an InnoLab can be developed and implemented will now be explored. Thematic focal points will be developed in the seminar and implemented in group work.
According to the United Nations (2019), the pressure on urban spaces is increasing due to intensified globalisation dynamics, increasing migration flows, steadily high greenhouse gas emissions and other trends. SC offers a solution to a wide range of urban problems by combining sustainable urban development with digitalisation issues using information and communication technologies to address current and future urban challenges. But what contribution can SC actually make to sustainable transformation? How far along are municipal SC projects? And how dominant is the role of digital technologies? The seminar will address these and other questions and is structured as follows:
The course is dedicated to the topic of international municipal cooperation. Both classic town twinning and project twinning and town networks are considered. The European work of cities and municipalities as well as municipal development cooperation are also in focus, as well as cooperation at regional level. Furthermore, global resolutions such as the Sustainable Development Goals or the New Urban Agenda and their significance for cities and municipalities will be discussed. The seminar shows different actors in this thematic field and thus also introduces potential occupational fields. In addition, the seminar will provide insights into other areas of international relevance at the municipal level, such as economic development and tourism promotion.
Here you will find master's theses supervised by Prof. Dr. Hohn from the Master's programme "Urban and Regional Development Management", selected bachelor's theses and diploma and state examination theses.
