Metropolitan spaces are both cause and effect of our contemporary societal, technological and ecological situation. They require and promote certain social structures; they call for certain technologies and offer opportunities for technological innovations; and as the alleged antithesis of nature they give birth to new ecologies. Seen from this point, it is only fair to argue that our future will be decided within metropolitan spaces. Yet it is almost impossible to identify an unambiguous direction of development. Instead, the respective processes of growth or shrinkage happen to occur very differently. And it is also true that the various metropolitan spaces and the actors within do cope very differently with the general global and the specific local challenges.
Any attempt to understand or even to influence the processes of transformation within metropolitan spaces requires a thorough understanding of the respective dynamics or, even better, an understanding of their mutual interplay. That entails knowledge about societal structures and processes, about urbanity as a social and spatial condition sui generis, about technological conditions and possibilities and also about dynamics in the natural environment to name but the most important aspects. Besides the specific local conditions the processes of the global change pose the key challenges.

The integrative research and teaching priority ›Transformation of Metropolitan Spaces‹ at the Department of Geography offers the opportunity to deal with all these questions individually and, more importantly, in lively exchange among one another. A special focus is put on the region Ruhr as well as on metropolitan spaces in Asia and the USA. We cooperate with regional partners (e.g., Stadt- und Regionalwissenschaftliches Forschungsnetzwerk Ruhr – SURF; Kompetenzfeld Metropolenforschung der Universitätsallianz Ruhr) and abroad. We are dedicated to basic research but likewise interested in providing knowledge and competences for practice. Correspondingly, teaching is as important as research. Besides our Bachelor- and Master-Courses our international and interdisciplinary Double Degree Master study program ›Transformation of urban Landscapes‹ is especially noteworthy.
