Harald Zepp (Applied Physical Geography)

As a geographer with a wide range of interests, my teaching comprises introductory courses in General Geography, Regional Geography as well as specialized Master courses. Based on a sound and broad geography education with background including minors in soil science and geology, I specialized in geomorphology, soil and catchment hydrology, doing research both in Germany and in subtropical China. Since a decade, I have been active in interdisciplinary studies in the field of transformation of urban landscapes working together with planning professionals outside of the university.

Prof. Dr. Matthias Kiese (Stadt- und Regionalökonomie)

Matthias Kiese studied geography and economics at the University of Hannover and at the London School of Economics and Political Science. After completing his PhD in 2002, he embarked on a post-doctoral research project on regional cluster policies in Germany, which led to his habilitation in 2008. Following appointments at the University of Munich and at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, he moved to his present position as a professor of human geography at the Ruhr University of Bochum in 2011. Within human geography, he and his team are in charge of urban and regional economics. His research and teaching focuses on economic geography, especially the knowledge- and innovation-based development of cities and regions, as well as on clusters and cluster policies.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Feldhoff

Thomas Feldhoff is Professor of Human Geography in the Department of Geography at Bochum University, Germany. With an academic background in human geography and East Asian area studies, his current research focuses on "Material Political Geographies" (georesources, geopolitics, energy transition and global governance challenges; food security, agricultural policy and the politics of national food identity) and "Space and Place in Public Policy" (sustainable cities in Asia and decarobinzation, governance and asset-based community development). His work has been published widely in books, edited volumes, and journals including the Journal of Transport Geography, the Journal of Global Initiatives, International

PD Dr. Pascal Goeke

PD Dr. Pascal Goeke studied Geography at the Universities of Frankfurt/Main, Nottingham and Eichstätt. He obtained his PhD from the University of Osnabrück and habilitated at the University of Zurich. His research program is about the relation of society and space and chances of transformation. Within that frame he has studied transnational biographies from the republics of former Yugoslavia, reflected upon the relation of sociological systems theory and the discipline geography, worked about sociotechnical conditions in the Anthropocene and focused on philanthropic foundations and how they foster and shape the common good.

Dr. Thomas Held

Dr. Thomas Held studied Geography and Biology. Having achieved the German teaching profession with qualification level I (grade "very good") in 1990, he held various positions as research assistant at RUB's Chair of Landscape Ecology. In 1995, Dr. Held finished up his doctorate (grade "with distinction"). Since 2000, he has been the Curator (or Chief Operations Officer) being responsible for budget, staff and spaces at RUB's Geography Department. Dr. Held is also a senior lecturer (courses regularly given are "spatial planning", water as a resource, energy landscapes, conflict landscapes). His research interests are spatial planning, landscape ecology, energy landscapes, stormwater management.

Dr. Dennis Edler

Dr. Dennis Edler studied Geography and English Philology at the Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB), including several stays in foreign countries, such as Ireland, Great Britain, Latvia and Greece. His research activities are related to virtual landscapes, 3D cartography and human cognition in map-reading tasks. As a senior lecturer at RUB's Geography Department, he teaches courses on multimedia cartography, map design, GIS and remote sensing. Luis Inostroza

Bio: I am an urban scholar with strong research experience in advanced spatially explicit quantitative methods based on an interdisciplinary scientific approach. My research is empirical and policy-oriented, with especial attention to dynamics of urban systems in Latin America and Europe. I integrate advanced quantitative analysis, remote sensing and GIS to analyse the material trajectories of socio ecological systems in a systemic perspective and its links to ecological and economic functions, from local to global scales. I received a master degree in architecture and human settlements- regional planning both in Chile. In 2011 I obtained my PhD Summa cum laude in Sustainable Urban Development at the Technical University of Madrid. I have teaching experience in Chile, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic and Poland in topics covering Urban Planning, GIS and Remote Sensing, Urban Economic Geography and Urban Ecology. I belong to the Society for Urban Ecology (SURE); I am chartered member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and member of the European Land use Institute (ELI). I am fluent in five languages.
