Christian Albert

Christian Albert is Professor of Environmental Analysis and Planning in Metropolitan Regions and director of the Planning Metropolitan Landscapes (PLACES) lab at Ruhr University Bochum's Institute of Geography. His research aims at advancing theories and methods of landscape and environmental planning to co-generate strategies and knowledge for attaining the goals of sustainable spatial development. Particular foci of his work are options for integrating novel concepts such as ecosystem services, green infrastructure and nature-based solutions, and the application of innovative methods in planning, including remote sensing, citizen science, and Geodesign.

Albert teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in environmental planning, landscape planning, ecosystem services, and scientific methods. He has been and is supervising twelve PhD dissertations and numerous master and bachelor theses.

Albert has published more than 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals and several book chapters and reports. He is co-editor of a German textbook on landscape planning (Landschaftsplanung, Ulmer, 2022) and on Planning nature-based solutions (Planung naturbasierter Lösungen, Ökom, 2021), co-editor of Landscape Planning with Ecosystem Services (Springer, 2019). He served as lead author of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) for the Regional Assessment for Europe and Central Asia (2018). He serves on the editorial boards of Landscape and Urban Planning, Landscape Ecology, and Social-Ecological Practice Research. Albert is associate editor for Ecosystems and People, editor of Landscape Online, subject editor for One Ecosystem, and editor of the Ecosystem Services book series (Springer). Albert is head of working groups at the Academy for Spatial Research and Planning (ARL), the Innovation Network Ecosystem Services (ESP-DE), the International Association of Landscape Ecology (IALE) and the Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP). He is board member of the German section of the International Association of Landscape Ecology (IALE-DE) and member of the ESP steering committee.

Prior employments include serving as Junior Professor for Landscape Planning and Ecosystem Services at Leibniz University Hannover and as PostDoc at the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Reseach - UFZ in Leipzig, Germany. He holds Habilitation, PhD and Master degrees in Environmental and Open Space Planning from Leibniz University and a Master in Design Studies degree from Harvard University.
